Structural dynamics is fairly controlled by the strategic design parameters.

When a structure undergoes corrosion, – leading to structural damage, the restoration / retrofit / refurbishment process is initiated.

Structural dynamics control or guide and channelise a method for rehabilitating the damaged structure.

The parameters like bending moment, split shear, punching shear, uplift pressure, differential lateral thrust etc are few of the many conditions which can damage the structure in addition to corrosion.

The speciality of structural damages due to the disorder in structural dynamics; is that they don’t give an apparent sign of structural distress. The signal through which such distress is identified is deflection or corner cracking etc.

While designing the structural restoration / retrofit / rehabilitation method or scheme for such structures, adequate importance is to be given to structural design and dynamics. It doesn’t just end with a conventional method of removal of some deteriorated mass, some injection and some reinstatement.

It calls for addressing the disturbed load transfer phenomena, unconventional behaviour under software analysis while subjecting it to anticipated loading condition, safety factor etc.

A small but significant part is also extracted at times from special properties of construction chemicals. For example, injection of glass flake filled low viscosity high molecular weight epoxy into concrete foundation for high RPM machine can grossly mitigate its vibration which – if not controlled; – can structurally distress the concrete foundation and might result in stoppage of machine operation.

A call is required to be taken by the construction chemical manufacturers to come up with a range of suitable construction chemical/s which can be successfully used for compensating the distress caused by disorder conditions like punching shear in tension zone of concrete.
